Scena ‘98 was formed in 1998 and is based in Maylands, Perth. It is a Polish-language theatre group that has performed 25 plays to date.
While the majority of members are children and young people, there are no restrictions on age or ability. Productions include works from both Polish and global literature, as well as original pieces by local Polish authors.
The group has performed widely across Perth in collaboration with Multicultural Arts of Western Australia Inc., at the University of Western Australia, and in Polish-owned venues. Scena ‘98 has also toured to Melbourne and, in 2003, performed at the National Polish Cultural Festival PolArt, which is held every three years — most recently in Sydney in 2022.
The group is entirely volunteer-run, relying on the time, energy, and talent of its members to bring theatre to Polish and Australian audiences. Its mission is to promote the Polish language and culture through the medium of theatre.
Membership in Scena ‘98 is non-financial, and to date, more than 300 people — and even two dogs — have participated in its productions. Members include children, youth, adults, and retirees.
