Polski Teatr Stary

The Polish Theatre "Stary" in Adelaide is a cornerstone of Polish cultural life in South Australia and will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2025.

Established in 1955 by post–World War II Polish migrants, it began as the Friends of the Theatre to fill a cultural void and promote Polish arts within the community. Over time, it adopted the name Stary (“Old”), reflecting a connection to Poland’s rich theatrical traditions.

Throughout its history, the theatre has been entirely volunteer-run and has staged over 100 productions, including works by Polish and international playwrights such as A. Fredro, M. Bałucki, S. Mrożek, G. Zapolska, S. Wyspiański, M. Wojtyszko, R. Latko, I. Degórska, W. Tomczyk, F. Veber, I. Menchell, N. Simon, and R. Cooney.

The group performs at The Parks Theatre in Angle Park and at the Dom Polski Centre on Angas Street — a hub for Polish cultural activities in Adelaide. It has also contributed to community welfare by producing short educational films for seniors on topics such as online safety, in collaboration with the Federation of Polish Organisations in SA.

In recognition of its cultural contributions, the theatre was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit in 1976 by the Polish Government-in-Exile.
