Renata Buziak is a biochrome artist, researcher and educator working at the intersection of art and science, helping people reconnect with nature through experimental photography.
Originally from Poland, Renata’s passion for nature and photography began in childhood, inspired by foraging traditions, herbal remedies, and time spent in the forest. Now based in Australia, her photographic research centres on plant life, exploring cycles of growth, decay and regeneration. She developed the biochrome process—a fusion of organic and photographic materials over time—which traces microbial activity and the transformative beauty of organic processes.
Renata’s PhD focused on medicinal plants of Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island), developed in consultation with members of the Quandamooka community. The resulting Medicinal Plant Cycles series highlights the island’s healing flora and celebrates deep ecological and cultural knowledge.
Her connection to Poland continues through her Polish Meadows series, first exhibited at PolArt 2018. Her new featured work, Szczawik zajęczy (Oxalis acetosella), traditionally used for healing and cooking, is part of an ongoing exploration of the flora around her hometown in Poland, where she recently held a solo exhibition.
Her work has featured on ABC TV’s Gardening Australia, received awards, and is held in public and private collections.
