Czesława Jakubowski

Born in Poland, Czesława took visual art classes while in high school, under a skilled art teacher at the Community Centre in Nowa Ruda, where she also exhibited her artworks.

In 1972, she migrated to Adelaide. She continued to paint and exhibit her oil paintings, and attended courses offered by the South Australian Department of Further Education. One of her most influential art teachers was Dr Jolly Koh.

On 3 May 1974, she co-founded the Australian-Polish Arts Society of South Australia with her sister, Irena Starmach Sroczyński, and Leszek Dankowski.

From 1975 to 1978, she studied at Marleston Technical College, which enabled her to work as a draftswoman at Marcris Industries Pty Ltd. From 1986, she was employed as an artist at the Jaś i Małgosia Child Care Centre. Czesława created decorations for various occasions and prepared programmes and materials to support teachers in art and craft classes.

She has been an active member of the Australian-Polish Arts Society since its inception. She served as the Society’s first President from 1974 to 1978, and as Secretary from 1991 to 2010. In 2010, she returned to the role of President and has held the position since.

Czesława has participated in numerous art exhibitions in Adelaide at venues including Millennium Hall, Dom Polski Centre, Dom Kopernika, Old Church Gallery (Eastwood), the Royal SA Society of Arts Gallery, the Hughes Gallery (Fullarton), and Axis Gallery (Parks Community Centre), as well as in exhibitions held in the Barossa Valley, by The Advertiser, and many more.
