'Polonus' Polish Folk Dance Group was established in 2014 by members of the Polish Association in Christchurch, becoming the first Polish folk dance group on New Zealand’s South Island. It brings together first, second and third-generation New Zealanders of Polish heritage, united by a deep passion for traditional Polish folk dance and music. The group’s mission is to preserve, celebrate and share Polish culture with wider audiences.
Polonus regularly performs at major multicultural events in the Canterbury region and at Polish community events across the South Island. In 2016, the group welcomed Dorota Kaminska Pawlas as its choreographer. Her expertise enriched the repertoire with authentic dances from the Cieszyn region and a variety of national Polish dances. Over the years, Polonus has grown in skill, developing into a dedicated and accomplished group.
In 2025, the group celebrates a major milestone—ten years since its debut performance at PolArt Melbourne in 2015. Since then, Polonus has proudly represented New Zealand at PolArt Brisbane 2018 and PolArt Sydney 2022. The group now looks forward to continuing its cultural journey at PolArt Adelaide 2025, marking a decade of vibrant performance and connection.
