The idea of a “poetry café” at the General W. Sikorski Polish Club in Perth (WA) began to take shape when poet Danuta Duszyńska arrived in Perth, bringing with her poetry, energy, and enthusiasm. The first poetry evening, held in 2019, was devoted to her work. More events soon followed, drawing out several poets who had until then been working in solitude. A number of poetry enthusiasts also joined, eager to recite or read poetry, along with a few musicians. From this momentum, a group was born under the patronage of the Sikorski Club.
The group adopted the name Jeszcze Raz (“Once Again”), symbolising a new chance for many of its members to fulfil themselves through art. Its mission is to promote the Polish language and poetry — including song — among club regulars, but also beyond the Polish community. The group even engages in international projects online.
Jeszcze Raz presents themed poetry and music performances several times a year at the Polish Club, performs for children in Polish schools, reads poetry for Polish seniors, and participates in various local cultural events. Most importantly, it provides a space of support for local authors and interpreters of Polish literature, both classic and modern. Whenever its members read or sing poetry, whether their own or others’, the hall is always full of listeners.
