Founded in 1981 by Christine Mikolajczak and currently directed by Mark and Kasia Mikolajczak, the Polish Folkloric Dance Group ‘Wielkopolska’ is a vibrant ensemble of children, teens and young adults dedicated to preserving and promoting Polish cultural heritage through dance. Based in Canberra, the group has proudly served as a cultural ambassador for over four decades, representing the Polish community at both local and national events.
Wielkopolska is the only Polish dance group in the ACT representing Poland and Polish culture at official events at the Australian Parliament, within various embassies and at high-profile events, such as the National Multicultural Festival, ACT Multicultural Awards, Floriade, the Royal Canberra Show and PolArt festivals nationwide. The dance group is based at the White Eagle Polish Club in Turner and maintains strong ties with Canberra’s Polish community, the Polish Embassy and the Polish Language School.
Wielkopolska’s dynamic repertoire spans Poland’s rich regional traditions to national dances presented in authentic, hand-crafted costumes from Poland. Some routines also incorporate creative modern twists on traditional music, breathing new life into folk traditions.
In 2025, Wielkopolska proudly celebrates over 40 years of storytelling through dance, honouring the vision of its founder and the generations who continue to carry that spirit forward.
